Essay

The thesis is the research into the development of leather handicrafts, the typological range, peculiarities of art and local variations of leather products in Pokuttia and Western Podillia. Comprehensive study made it possible to identify patterns of formation of artistic traditions, determine the factors, characteristic of typology, and artistic peculiarities of leatherwork. The author introduces the notion of the new factual materials. She obtains more detailed information about the centers of sheepskin making, discovers new names of the artisans, who manufactured sheepskin products and were engaged in the gentle craft in Pokuttia and Western Podillia. The author studied and organized a considerable amount of leatherwork of the late 19th and early 20th century.
