Essay

The dissertation discloses for the first time the theoretical and methodological aspects of development of the West Ukrainian People’s Republic (WUPR) Armed Forces and proposes to distinguish between three stages of their reform (November 1–9, 1918; November 9, 1918; June 9, 1919; June 9 – July 16, 1919), and analyzes the division of powers between the main front and rear military authorities. The semantic boundaries of the term «military and political thought» are outlined and interpreted by the dissertant as opinions of the politicians and the military about the ways and means of solving political problems by the use of military force. It is emphasized on the expediency of using the term «Ukrainian Army» in reference to the WUPR/West Ukrainian District of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (WUDUPR) Armed Forces. The features of the administration of the Armed Forces of the AustroHungarian Monarchy, which became the basis for the development of the WUPR troops according to the European model, are characterized.
