The paper presents the state of development of the scientific problem, analyzes the reference of the research, systematizes its conceptual and categorical apparatus; analyzes the state of the research of the problem of aesthetic education of children in the historical and pedagogical retrospective; the essence and the importance of aesthetic education have been revealed and the Ukrainian family has been characterized as the main source of the formation and development of the aesthetic culture of the child՚s personality; the educational potential of Ukrainian folk pedagogy in the aesthetic education of children has been found out; the content of aesthetic upbringing of children in the Ukrainian family of the second half of the twentieth century is revealed by means of folklore, arts and crafts and folk toys; the progressive achievements of Ukrainians in the field of aesthetic education by means of Ukrainian folk pedagogy in the Ukrainian family of the second half of the twentieth century are substantiated for creative usage in the modern realities of family education. It is proved that the aesthetic education of the young generation throughout human history is an important goal, and the socio-historical nature of the development of the aesthetic education system is defined as complex, stable and saturated with specific cultural components. The analysis of the genesis and current state of the aesthetic education system revealed the presence of universal and specific characteristics. It is showed that aesthetic education is carried out in the spirit of established ideas about beauty and harmony. The process of studying the basic ideas and principles of aesthetic education made it possible to identify the most significant characteristics of aesthetic education.
