Essay

The paper is the theoretical research of the control system development of pupils’ foreign language academic achievements in Ukrainian schools (the 60s of the 20th century – the beginning of the 21st century). The urgency of the research issue is explained by globalization processes in Ukraine and worldwide, the growing interest of the modern society to foreign languages, increasing motivation in mastering them, which cause the need to reform the secondary education content and structure. The compulsory component of the latter is the diagnostics of educational activity which includes checking, assessment, defining of the educational and pupils’ personal foreign language achievements dynamics, their improvement prediction and further development trends. The concept of «control system of pupils’ foreign language academic achievements» is defined as the set of related components: aims, objects, functions, types, forms and means of testing and assessment of pupils’ educational activity, which is the efficient instrument of influence on their foreign language experience improvement. The trends of foreign language teaching content renewal in the secondary educational institutions and its influence on the specification of objects and means of control are outlined, as well as the development of objectives, forms, objects, means and types of control in teaching the foreign language content is analysed. It is determined that in the Soviet era teaching the foreign language in Ukrainian schools depended on the Soviet ideology, at the same time the objectives of teaching the foreign language and control objects were specified due to the degree of the state openness. Within the framework of the subject under study, it is discovered that the control was totally influenced by the goals and methods of teaching foreign languages. It is investigated that there was the content renewal of the foreign language study in the 90s years of the 20th century in Ukraine. The main focus of the language testing concept development is characterized. It is outlined that nowadays the main objective of teaching the foreign language in secondary schools is to form the foreign language communicative competence based on the language knowledge and communicative skills which are the objects of control. The innovative forms and means of control in the secondary educational institutions at the beginning of the XXI century are analysed. The role of the information and communication technologies in the realization of control of pupils’ foreign language academic achievements is determined. The recommendations of pupils’ foreign language academic achievements control implementation are presented. The research findings are suggested being used while constructing the tasks’ content for checking pupils’ foreign language academic achievements on different control levels (current, interim, final) and stages of studying (primary, main, high school) due to the requirements of the competency-based approach.
