The object of the investigation is the process of development of the secondary education in the historical realities of post-reform modernization in the Russian Empire. The purpose of the study is to make historical reconstruction of the process of formation and functioning of the system of secondary educational institutions of the Katerynoslav province in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The methods used are the following: analysis, synthesis, comparative-historical, historical-genetic, problem-chronological, historical-typological. The scientific novelty of the investigation: the comprehensive study of the process of secondary education development in Katerynoslav province in the context of educational reforms of the second half of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries is conducted; prerequisites for the development of new types of secondary schools (real and commercial schools, women's highschools and highschools, eparchial women's schools) are defined and the stages of their formation and development in Katerynoslav province are substantiated; the summary list of all secondary schools in Katerynoslav province as of 1917 is developed; the process of organization and activity of different types of educational institutions in Katerynoslav province, the essence of influence of social requests of society on the dynamics of changes in the network of educational institutions in different periods are revealed; the role of local self-government, public and private initiative in the organization of secondary educational institutions is investigated, the contribution of prominent educational figures to the development of secondary educational institutions of the region is highlighted. The practical value of the study: the materials of the investigation can be used in the educational work of secondary and higher educational institutions, for teaching courses on the history of Ukraine, history of culture, education, history of the native land.
