Essay

The thesis covers organizational and pedagogical foundations and describes the tendencies of national-patriotic youth education in the western Ukrainian diaspora of the second half of the XX – the beginning of the XXI centuries, the author’s periodization of its development is presented. Scientific and practical experience that requires comprehensive study and consideration of new approaches and strategies for improving the content, form, means and directions of educational work with young Ukrainians living in Ukraine and abroad in a foreign language environment. The socio-historical background of national-patriotic youth education system development in the western Ukrainian diaspora are highlighted. It is established that the basis for the emergence, functioning and further development of Western Ukrainian diaspora youth organizations in the second half of the twentieth century was the third wave of Ukrainian emigration to Europe, North and South America and Australia. A large number of Ukrainian emigrants, a considerable part among them were representatives of the creative intelligentsia, scholars and educators, contributed to the development of Ukrainian political, public, cultural and religious life in the diaspora. The content, forms, methods and means of younger generation national-patriotic education in the western Ukrainian diaspora youth organizations in the second half of the XX – the beginning of the XXI century were analyzed. It was found that Plast, an organization of Ukrainian youth, created for patriotic and comprehensive self-education, the most effective organization for Ukrainian youth was educated in the spirit of love for Ukraine for several generations. Any citizen, regardless of nationality or ethnic origin, can become a Plastun if he/she is willing to take an oath that includes the three main responsibilities of the Ukrainian Plastun: «To be faithful to God and Ukraine, to help others, to live by the Plast Law and to obey the Plast authorities». The main forms of national-patriotic education in this organization were: Plast gathering, Plast camps, Plast journeys and walks, Plast holidays, meetings, trips, Plast tests and skills exams, which give knowledge, in particular about Ukraine. It was found that Ukrainian Youth Union was actively involved in the national upbringing of the younger generations in the diaspora. The Union of Ukrainian Youth in Emigration was aimed at educating the younger generations in a spirit of respect for their country of origin, as well as shaping the will and intentions of the youth to serve Ukrainian people. UUY’s mission was not to discriminate against foreign-born, but to nurture the understanding that, while learning a foreign language and culture, a person must not forget his/her native and national background. Important forms of educational work in this organization were: games and entertainment, national holidays, camps and events. It was found out that such student organizations as Central Union of Ukrainian Students, Ukrainian Academic Society «Zarevo», Association of Ukrainian Studying Youth named after I. Mikhnovskyi, student clubs of Democratic Ukrainian Youth Union, the Society «Obnova» and others. It was turned up that since Ukraine has gained independence youth organizations began to revive and Western Ukrainian diaspora youth organizations actively participated in this process. The introduction substantiates the relevance of the thesis topic, indicates its relation to scientific programs, plans, topics; the aim, tasks, object, subject matter, methods, chronological boundaries, sources of the study are determined; the scientific novelty and practical significance of the obtained results are revealed; information on the implementation, validation and publication of the dissertation results is given; its structure and content are indicated. The first section analyzes the historiography and source of the study. The socio-historical background of national-patriotic youth education in the western Ukrainian diaspora of the second half of the XX – the beginning of the XXI century are distinguished. The views of the Ukrainian diaspora educators (H. Vashchenko, E. Zharskyi, I. Ohienko, I. Petriv, A. Horokhovych, etc.) as to the aim, tasks, forms, methods and means of national-patriotic youth education in the countries of residence multicultural environment are revealed. The second chapter substantiates the periodization and outlines the main tendencies in the development of national-patriotic youth education in the Western Ukrainian diaspora, describes the tasks and content of youth and student organizations activities in national-patriotic education; organizational forms, directions, methods and means of education are investigated, the role of the tutor in the national-patriotic education of young people in the western Ukrainian diaspora is revealed. The main tendencies of each period are identified and characterized.
