The thesis deals with a theoretical and experimental study of the issue of future
dentists’ foreign language competence formation. Diagnosis of future doctors’ foreign
language competence formation revealed its insufficient level during ascertaining
stage, that promoted the analysis of the experience of future dentists’ foreign language
competence formation in Europe, countries of North America and in Ukrainian higher
educational institutions.
The notion of «dentist’s foreign language competence» was clarified as

ability to integrate effectively acquired language knowledge (vocabulary, grammar,
phonetics) and language skills (reading, listening, writing, speaking) into professional
activity.

Structural components of foreign language competence (gnoseоlogical, activity,
reflexive), criteria (gnoseological, activity, reflexive), and levels (high, medium, low)
of foreign language competence formation were determined. The gnoseological
component reflects linguistic, deontological, sociocultural components of future
dentists’ foreign language competence; the activity component involves the formation
of research, communicative competencies and contains discursive and strategic
components of foreign language competence; the reflective component forms a self-
assessment of future dentists’ achievements.
The model of future dentists’ foreign language competence formation was
developed and tested. It consists of 5 interconnected components which were
identified as target, organizational and content, activity, evaluative and reflexive,
resulting ones. The target component defines the aim and main tasks of future
dentists’ foreign language competence formation that are required to perform with the
purpose of reaching the result. The next component is identified as the organizational
and content one which established the principles, specifics, factors, pedagogical
conditions and fields of foreign language competence formation. The activity
constituent identifies the different technologies, forms and techniques of future
dentists’ foreign language competence formation that allow activating students’
vocabulary knowledge and motivating them to study. The evaluative and reflexive
element includes monitoring the learning process, when the level of future dentists’
foreign language competence is determined in accordance with the established criteria
(high, intermediate, low). The final component is the resulting one that reveals the
present result: formed future dentists’ foreign language competence.
The practical importance of the obtained scientific results consists in the
development of scientific and methodological materials for future dentists’ foreign
language competence formation during the study of the disciplines "Foreign
language" and "Professional Foreign Language"; the scientific results of the
dissertation were the basis for the development of training syllabuses in the
disciplines "English language" and "Professional English"; the method of future
dentists’ foreign language competence formation was introduced into the
educational process; materials for the knowledge of professional English control were
tested.
The results can be used in the process of future dentists and postgraduate
students’ foreign language competence formation.
