Essay

The thesis deals with a theoretical and experimental study of the issue of future dentists’ foreign language competence formation. Diagnosis of future doctors’ foreign language competence formation revealed its insufficient level during ascertaining stage, that promoted the analysis of the experience of future dentists’ foreign language competence formation in Europe, countries of North America and in Ukrainian higher educational institutions. The notion of «dentist’s foreign language competence» was clarified as personal quality acquired in the process of foreign language training, reflecting its ability to integrate effectively acquired language knowledge (vocabulary, grammar, phonetics) and language skills (reading, listening, writing, speaking) into professional activity. 19 Structural components of foreign language competence (gnoseоlogical, activity, reflexive), criteria (gnoseological, activity, reflexive), and levels (high, medium, low) of foreign language competence formation were determined. The gnoseological component reflects linguistic, deontological, sociocultural components of future dentists’ foreign language competence; the activity component involves the formation of research, communicative competencies and contains discursive and strategic components of foreign language competence; the reflective component forms a self- assessment of future dentists’ achievements. The model of future dentists’ foreign language competence formation was developed and tested. It consists of 5 interconnected components which were identified as target, organizational and content, activity, evaluative and reflexive, resulting ones. The target component defines the aim and main tasks of future dentists’ foreign language competence formation that are required to perform with the purpose of reaching the result. The next component is identified as the organizational and content one which established the principles, specifics, factors, pedagogical conditions and fields of foreign language competence formation. The activity constituent identifies the different technologies, forms and techniques of future dentists’ foreign language competence formation that allow activating students’ vocabulary knowledge and motivating them to study. The evaluative and reflexive element includes monitoring the learning process, when the level of future dentists’ foreign language competence is determined in accordance with the established criteria (high, intermediate, low). The final component is the resulting one that reveals the present result: formed future dentists’ foreign language competence. The practical importance of the obtained scientific results consists in the development of scientific and methodological materials for future dentists’ foreign language competence formation during the study of the disciplines "Foreign language" and "Professional Foreign Language"; the scientific results of the dissertation were the basis for the development of training syllabuses in the disciplines "English language" and "Professional English"; the method of future dentists’ foreign language competence formation was introduced into the educational process; materials for the knowledge of professional English control were tested. The results can be used in the process of future dentists and postgraduate students’ foreign language competence formation.
