Essay

This research is devoted to theoretical and empirical study of peculiarities of developing professional self-consciousness in future psychologists gaining a second university degree. Level-based criteria for sophistication of professional self-consciousness have been determined. It was empirically established that students gaining a second university degree in psychology different from the field of specialization under basic education degree have specific manifestations of such mental phenomena as motivational factors for choosing a psychologist’s profession (inner individually important and socially important motives), emotional intellect (lowered indicators of self-motivation, empathy and control of one’s own emotions), professional identity (domination of communicative, social, reflective “self”), life-sense orientations (lowered ability to freely make decisions and carry them out), self-evaluation (inadequately overstated). A conceptual structural-functional model of professional self-consciousness of psychologists was created, structured by criteria: cognitive (realization of professionally important qualities, professional self-cognition); affective-evaluative (professional selfevaluation, self-acceptance, self-attitude), behavioral (motivational/value-based and regulatory/activity-based aspects); functional (categorization of objects in the world of profession, subjective evaluation); procedural (sense formation, meta-theoretical thinking, reflection, realization and self-evaluation, motivation); effective (psychological thinking and professional “self”-concept, professional culture of personality). The author’s original Program for Psychological Support to Development of Professional Self-Consciousness in Psychologists Gaining a Second University Degree was substantiated, developed and experimentally tested. A positive quantitative and qualitative shift in the structure of self-attitude and in the structure of the content of professional self-consciousness of future psychologists after a developing impact was obtained. Keywords: future psychologists, professional self-consciousness, development of self-consciousness, second university degree, psychosemantics, image of professional “self”, motivation, reflection.
