Essay

Theoretical framework of education development in secondary schools of Ukraine is the research object. The research aim is to summarize the experience and scientifically substantiate the theoretical foundations of the educational content in secondary schools of Ukraine in the second half of the nineteenth – early twentieth century, to estimate the significance Ukrainian teachers and scholars achievements to improve the content of school education in modern conditions. The research methods: search and bibliographic, chronological, comparative, statistical analysis, systematization, and theoretical generalization, content analysis, structural, functional, theoretical modeling of educational content. For the first time school educational content in Ukraine in the second half of the XIX – early XX century has been comprehensively studied; the author's periodization of educational content in the context of socio-economic, political and national-cultural determinants. The specifics of each period have been shown. The orderliness and gradualness of changes in foreign educational systems and the chaos and inconsistency of reforms in the Russian Empire that negatively affected the research and methodological support of the educational process, including educational content, have been proved; the trends in educational content in foreign secondary schools on the basis of domestic periodicals have been revealed; a comparative characteristics of educational content in the Ukrainian lands under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires has been provided. Emphasis is placed on the achievements of humanities education; theoretical generalizations on the content and peculiarities of the study of natural sciences have been further developed; a significant number of little-known archival documents and historical materials have been introduced into scientific circulation. A comprehensive analysis of journals on the educational content in secondary schools has been carried out; positive retrospective experience in choosing educational content and the possibility of implementing didactic ideas of the past in terms of reforming modern school has been generalized; a comprehensive analysis of the system of basic concepts that characterize educational content has been conducted, the relationship between their structural elements on the basis of comparative tables has been established.
