Grigorak A. The Worldview and Social History of Ukraine Through the Prism of the Iconography of the 15th – 18th Cent.

In the dissertation on the basis of pictorial and written sources, modern research methods, historical and anthropological strategy the worldview ideas of Ukrainian society of the 15th – 18th cent. is reconstructed and reflected in the iconography of the Last Judgment. To do this, the current state of scientific development of the topic is analyzed and the following is clarified: specifics and informative possibilities of the source base; features of the notions of death and misery are recorded in the iconography of the Last Judgment; characteristic features of symbols of heaven and hell in the context of correspondence with written sources; the relationship of the varieties of the state judicial system with ideas about the Court of Heaven; identified and analyzed the attitude of creators / observers from the regions of origin of icons to different social groups of the Ukrainian people and other nations reflected in the iconographic plots; everyday life of society: forbidden leisure, evolution and functions of clothing as social, ethnocultural, confessional markers; socially “condemned” professions and crafts and the reasons for condemnation of individual artisans. Historians, art critics, theologians / theologians have discovered the origins of the plot, the correspondence of images to eschatological written sources, the reflection of social issues in hellish scenes and the semantics of images. But a number of issues still need to be clarified and viewed from a new perspective. The source base is quite representative and is represented, in addition to the icons of the Last Judgment of the 15th – 18th cent. by a set of pictorial and written sources. The objectives of the work and its main goal are achieved through historical and anthropological strategies.
