Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the notion of relevance within the informal argumentation study. The topicality of this research relates to the absence of a common view on the relevance within the contemporary argumentation theory. The integrated conception of relevance as an inclusive criterion of argument evaluation is developed in the dissertation. For this purpose, different interpretations of the notion of relevance are analyzed and compared. The primary focus is on the differences between the informal and formal interpretations of relevance, as between informal and pragmatic (D. Sperber and D. Wilson’s “relevance theory”) interpretations. With respect to the first item, it is found, firstly, different views on the content of proposition; secondly, the application of the relevance to different types of reasoning; thirdly, distinct functions of the relevance.
