According to the criteria (leading directions of the state national policy, which outlined the tasks of theoretical and practical training of subject teachers, in particular who was to teach Ukrainian language and literature; the main trends in domestic secondary education, which determined the requirements for future teachers; vision of the role of the subject teacher in the educational process, etc.), formed and substantiated the author's periodization of the process of training teachers of Ukrainian language and literature in the system of higher pedagogical education of Ukraine second half of XX – early XXI century). The practical significance of the study is that its position and results allowed to clarify the features of the training of teachers of Ukrainian language and literature in the system of higher pedagogical education of Ukraine (second half of XX – early XXI century), to identify the main trends immediate resolution. Based on the study, an author's special course “Training of teachers of Ukrainian language and literature in higher pedagogical educational institutions of Ukraine: history and modernity” was developed for undergraduates majoring in 011 Educational, pedagogical sciences.
