Essay

The object of the research is the regional intellectual space of Southern Ukraine in the 1840s and 1860s in the context of all-Russian public opinion. The purpose of the research is to determine the place and the role of Gersevanov’s oeuvre and public activity in the regional and all-Russian intellectual context. The methodological basis of the study were general scientific methods (analysis and synthesis, comparison, generalization) and methods of historical sciences: historical-typological, problem-chronological, historical-genetic, historical-systemic, historical-comparative. The scientific novelty is determined by the fact that for the first time the creative work of the Katerinoslav publicist was comprehensively considered and analyzed. In the research for the first time was: an analysis of the historiographical tradition of coverage of the person and activities of M. Gersevanov; carried out the reconstruction of the M. Gersevanov’s biography; bibliography of M. Gersevanov’s works were expanded; the perception of the intellectual situation in the Katerinoslav region in the middle of the 19th century was significantly changed; the complex of actual social, social and economic, spiritual and cultural problems and inquiries of the provincial educated community is defined; on the example of the Gersevanov’s work the importance of provincial journalism for the formation of a regional intellectual environment was demonstrated; the picture of the all-Russian socio-political and economic discussion of 1840-1860 was specified. Practical value: results of research can be used at writing of monographs and articles, for development of the general courses on intellectual history of Ukraine and the Russian empire, history of culture, military affairs, regional history and local history. Field of application: educational process.
