Essay

On the basis of a wide range of actualized sources, the paper studies, the formation and development of the territory of one of the hetman's capitals of Ukraine - Baturyn. The town-forming factors - natural conditions of the area, administrative and socio-economic factors are considered. The main stages of the history of Baturyn’s urban space and the periods of population changes were determined. It was found out that the specificity of Baturyn’s town-planning, social and economic development was caused by the long stay of Hetman’s residences and officers’ households in the town. The topographic peculiarities of the town’s structural elements were singled out. The main components of the fortifications of the Baturyn fortress and the stages of their development were looked into. The process of formation of Baturyn’s suburbs and its outskirts was determined; their territorial boundaries were clarified. The general volumetric and spatial composition of the city, the formation of a network of streets are considered. The redevelopment of Baturyn in the second half of 18th century was traced, the church topography and location of the necropolis were clarified. The church topography and the location of necropolis. Considered the building of the residences of hetmans Demian Ignatovich, Ivan Samoilovich, Ivan Mazepa, Kirill Razumovski, as well as the estates of the Cossack minor officers. The administrative buildings and constructions of public, industrial, commercial purposes, as well as the burghers’ households are systematized according to their functional purpose and localized in the urban space of Baturyn. The sociotopography of Baturyn of the second half of the 18th century is considered.
