Kokhan O. Economic and legal status of the Kyiv burghers in 1782 – 1870

The dissertation is a complex research of the evolution of economic and legal status of the Kyiv burghers during 1782-1870. It was established that the main sources of replenishment of the bourgeoisie were natives of villages and impoverished merchants of the third guild. It was covered in details the property status of the Kyiv burghers, which was the most numerous and, simultaneously, the poorest part of the city population. The main areas of professional and economic activity of the Kyiv burghers were crafts, trade, employment in manufacturing and factory production, fisheries, agriculture, etc. One of the most lucrative businesses was trade. The center of trade became Podil, which was the most beautiful and the richest part of the city. Kyivans paid a lot of taxes, which increased constantly. Among them were state, zemstvo, food taxes, etc. Among the indirect taxes was stamp duty, which was levied by selling stamp paper for business transactions. Since the second third of the 19th century Kyivans carried out recruitment, road, arrival and draft duties. After abolition of the Magdeburg Law, the legal position of the Kyiv burghers deteriorated sharply. Also there have changed the conditions of their participation in local authorities.
