Object of research: Ukrainian and Finnish modern nations during their joint being in the Russian Empire from late 18th to early 20th centuries. The purpose of the study is tocharacterize in complex the nation-building processes in the Grand Duchy of Finland and Sub-Russian Ukraine, and ascertainment of their specifics. The methods used are the following: analysis and synthesis, classification and periodization, extrapolation, comparative, problem-chronological, systemic, typological. The scientific novelty of the research: firstly, it has been performed a comparative analysis of the construct and development of Finnish and Ukrainian modern nations from late 18th to early 20th centuries; there was given a complex description of the Finnish and Ukrainian national movements, that has based on a comparison of the activities of their prominent representatives; it was studied that the long nation-building process in Finland and Sub-Russian Ukraine in a polyethnic imperial society gradually consolidated the separation of national identities peculiar only to these territories, contrary to the unification measures of the Tsarist autocracy; there was highlighted and characterized the creative work of Fennomans and Svecomans, which is compared with the similar activities of Ukrainophiles, and formed the image of the separateness and uniqueness of the bicultural Finnish people. The practical value of the study: the materials of the research will be useful in writing scientific papers, preparing courses on the history of Ukraine, Finland, Russia, world history, history of European public opinion. Field of using: educational process.
