In the dissertation for the first time in domestic science the complex historiographical research of studying of the Ukrainian national identity in the end of the XX – the beginning of the XXI century is carried out. A brief digression into the history of studies of the concept of "identity" is made, first described by representatives of psychoanalysis Z. Freud, C. G. Jung, E. Fromm. Subsequently, in the works of sociologist E. Erickson, a basic theory of "identity crises" was formed for further research. Due to the accumulation of knowledge about the process of nation-building, sociologists, political scientists and ethnologists theoretically outlined the phenomenon of "national identity". The main world classical and modern theories, directions of understanding the processes of identification of nations as modern civil and political communities are comprehended in this dissertation. The periodization of the study of the problem with its substantiation in the context of the development of the domestic historiographical process, the latest theoretical approaches and methodology has been improved. The main stages, directions and features of studying the topic are comprehensively analyzed. There are two historiographical periods of scientific development of the topic: 1) early (mid-nineteenth century – late 1980's), 2) modern (1990 – present). Although the representatives of the early stage did not use modern terminology, in their scientific works they clearly outlined the essence, functions and structure of the phenomenon. M. Kostomarov, V. Antonovych, M. Mikhnovsky, V. Vernadsky, D. Dontsov, and others can be distinguished among such researchers. These studies were successfully continued by Ukrainian scientists who were in exile in Western Europe and North America (O. Kulchytsky, O. Bochkovsky, V. Starosolsky, B. Tsymbalisty, V. Yaniv, etc.).
