Essay

The object of research is the city society of the Hetmanshchynа. The subject of the study is servants as a socio-professional group, which was a part of the urban society of the Hetmanshchynа. The purpose of the work is to establish and comprehensively investigate the existence of servants in the cities of the Hetmanshchynа of the XVIII century as a separate socio-professional group of the population on the basis of written sources. The results of the research: the state of elaboration of the problem in historiography is analyzed and the peculiarities of the representation of servants in written sources are clarified; the theoretical aspect of the functioning of the institute of service in the cities of the Hetmanshchynа in the middle of the XVIII century is studied, namely the problem of terminology, classification and types of service, characteristic features of the legal status of servants; the place of servants in the urban space is considered and the forms of personal interaction between the master and the servant are highlighted; identified and analyzed the socio-demographic characteristics of different categories of employers: cossacks, clergy and burghers; the most important aspects of domestic service in the light of demographic analysis are studied: gender-age and marriage structure; the peculiarities of service of separate age groups of employees are studied. Scope: the results of the work can be used in the process of writing generalizing works on the history of the Hetmanshchynа of the XVIII century, historical demography, economic and social history, family history. The results of the study can be recommended in the development of textbooks for secondary and higher education institutions, training courses in the humanities. The hypotheses can be used to study various aspects of family history, gender issues, social anthropology.
