Thesis for the scientific degree of candidate of historical sciences in specialty 07.00.01 – History of Ukraine. T. H. Shevchenko National University “Chernihiv Colehium”. Chernihiv, 2021. The dissertation research is devoted to one of the significant periods in the history of Nizhyn Higher School – a well-known center of higher education in Ukraine and abroad. The dissertation, based on the analysis of a wide range of documentary sources, periodicals, sources of personal origin, the use of the principle of historicism and objectivity, as well as a wide range of general, historical and special historical methods, describes the creation and operation of the Nizhyn Institute of public education and Nizhyn Institute of social education in the context of educational reforms and socio-political processes in the 20 - early 30’s of the twentieth century. The study allowed outlining transformations of the institute structure, changes in management system, formation of teaching staff and student body of the institution, modernization of the material base. In particular, organizational bases of creation and transformation of faculties and departments, emergence of the research department of the history of culture and language and other research and cultural-educational associations in the structure of Nizhyn higher school are clarified. The peculiarities of organization of educational process, the main directions of teaching and research activities of teachers of Nizhyn Higher School are clarified. The paper presents a social portrait of students and teachers of Nizhyn Higher School, describes the features of their everyday lives, participation in socio-political and public life. The life trajectories of the most famous alumnae of Nizhyn Higher School of the 1920s and the first half of the 1930s are traced.
