Lesiv T. Icon painting in Galicia from the late 19th ‒ early 21st centuries: artistic imagery and theoretical discourse.

This dissertation opens a theoretical discourse regarding iconography and specifics of the artistic and figurative features of iconographic works from Galicia from the late 19th - early 20th centuries. Based on a wide range of sources icon paintings (iconostasis, individual icons, murals) and theoretical materials (religious texts, church documents, sermons, interviews) the dissertation outlines the stages and nature of the development of Eastern Christian tradition of iconography in the region, analyzes the impact of national and cultural discourse on the tradition of iconography, considers specific artistic and stylistic features of iconographic works, reveals traditional and innovative strategies of icon painting practitioners, and ascertains the influence of the aesthetics of modernism and postmodernism on the work of iconographers in the region.
