Essay

The study seeks to examine the specifics of the development of actionism in the 20th – 21st centuries, to outline its basic types, to explore the peculiar characteristics of its forming in the national art. For the first time, a considerable amount of unknown factual material on current practices in Western art has been studied and put into scientific use, thus demonstrating Ukrainian art as the one which developed in the context of global trends having the prospects for scientific coverage by historians, critics, and theorists. The art of avant-garde is defined as one of the sources which contributed to new means of expression in actionism. The main changes in the art of the second half of the 1950s-1960s were characterized by the combination of art with the life and emergence of new forms of artistic expression: happenings, performances, objects, assemblage, and body art. In most artistic events, the artists emphasized political, social, gender, environmental and other pressing (social) issues. The work explores the disctinctive features of the emergence and formation of actionism in Ukrainian art. It is shown that the origins of the art of actionism are in the philosophical and theoretical foundations of the avant-garde (mainly futurism / quero-futurism).
