Essay

The problem of relations between two independent Greek Catholic provinces – the Eparchy of Mukachevo and the Metropolitanate of Galicia was raised in the dissertation research. Based on the analysis of unpublished and published archival sources and also on some work of the church and secular historians, the comprehensive research of institutional relations between church communities as well as the personal relations between their clergy was carried out. Chronological boundaries of the study cover 1919-1991. In this research the main aspects of relations between two church institutions in the context of reforming the Order of St. Basil the Great in the Eparchy of Mukachevo by Galician Basilian monks were analyzed, their missionary, cultural and educational activity was revealed and the relationship between Metropolitan Archbishop A. Sheptytsky and the representatives of the Transcarpathian spiritual and secular intelligentsia was considered. The intercourse between Metropolitan of Galicia and the Eparchy of Mukachevo was analyzed through the prism of tragic events of World War II and repressive policy of the Soviet state which was aimed at liquidation of Greek Catholic Church as the institution. The phenomenon of “the catacomb church” was clarified, especially the cooperation of the clergy of both provinces adapted to the conditions of underground life. A special attention was paid to the figure of Metropolitan Josyf Slipyj and his relationships with priests of the Eparchy of Mukachevo in prison. It was traced how the personal relationships between the clergy of the «Church of silence» influenced the future fate of the Greek Catholic Church and especially the legalization process.
