Essay

The relevance of the study of life, socio-political and local lore activity of S. D. Nіs (1829–1901) due to the role he played during the Ukrainian national revival, as well as his contribution to the development of Ukrainian science and culture in the second half of the nineteenth century. The work on the basis of a wide range of updated sources and scientific literature, developed with the help of modern methodological tools, reconstructed the main stages of the biography of S. D. Nіs, the formation of his democratic worldview and national identity. The social-political and cultural-educational activity of S. D. Nіs as one of the founders of the Chernihiv Hromada and a recognized leader of local Ukrainophiles is covered. The sociocultural and intellectual environment of S. D. Nos, which constituted his «biographical world», is characterized. A scientometric analysis of S. D. Nіs works, published in the journals «Chernihiv Provincial Gazette», «Osnova» and «Kievskaya Starina», which is consistent with the main stages of his life. The work for the first time covers S. D. Nіs participation in the local lore movement of the second half of the 19th century, the directions of his local lore studies in the field of urban and village history, family history, historical biography, folklore and ethnography, natural science and folk medicine. The archeographic work of S. D. Nіs, who introduced a number of historical documents and materials of the Cossack era into scientific circulation, is characterized. The dissertation research testified to the profile of S. D. Nis as a devotee of the national idea, the activity and heritage of which deserve respect and further in-depth study and use at the present stage of development of national science and culture.
