Essay

The dissertation discovers the grounds, causes, results and cosequences of the Ukrainian- Russian War of the 1658-1659. It presents the detailed analysis and description of the military actions and reveals the military art of the Cossacks during the Conotop Battle (1659). The chronology of the War is developed and the plans and goals of the sides during the diplomatic talks are detected. The whole set of Ukrainian-Russian relations during the period of Ivan Vygovsky’s het’manat is examined. The incompatibleness of the conceptual approaches of tsar’s and het’man’s governments to the problem of the future of Ukraine is recognized as the main cause of the War.
