The Object: Urban water supply systems. Purpose: Development of theoretically and experimentally grounded methods of improving the performance of water delivery and distribution systems. Methods and apparatus: Theoretical investigations were carried out using mathematical apparatus of higher algebra, mathematical programming, theory of probabilities and mathematical statistics, theory of graphs, method of correlation and progressive analysis, including non-linear multi-factor modeling. Experimental investigations were performed in natural conditions using microprocessor-based devices linked with COMCON-Micro controller by means of interface that were used for gathering, storage and transmission of data, ultrasonic flow meters, strain gauge pressure pickups DD, thickness gauges etc. Theoretical and practical results: A method of calculating factor (=f[Re,(((T)] for the d=1200, 1400, 1600 mm water mains was developed which allows to perform an expert assessment of the water mains' condition for the purp ose of renovation. The main factors influencing the specific daily water consumption of a city (natural and climatic conditions, town building design etc.) were identified. Method of calculating specific daily water consumption was developed allowing to assess the situation and make rational decisions in the water supply industry. A method of a two-circuit automated control for water delivery and distribution systems was developed, which allows to stabilize heads in the dictating point. A new method for determining the dictating point was proposed. A method of forecasting the frequency of failures in the mater network and of assessing the condition of plumbing fixtures in the urban housing stock was developed. New scientific aspects: The said results were used as a basis for developing and implementing new methods of improving the performance of water supply systems. Degree of implementation: The developed methods were implemented in the corporate automated water supply system of Kharkov. Methods of calcula ting water consumption were used for the development of a comprehensive program for the city of Moscow in compliance with the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the USSR №1405-p dd. 19.06.87. They are also used in the curriculum of the Kharkov State Technical University of Construction and Architecture. Scope of use: Urban water supply systems.
