Essay

The dissertation is devoted to the ethnic identification and sociopolitical life of Ukrainians in Galicia with the focus on the role of Russian factor. The 1861-1867 decentralizing reform of the Habsburg empire assured privileges for Polish gentry and while discriminating Galician Ukrainian has strengthened their eastward orientation. This resulted in the evolution of the Russophile ideology into political Moskvophilism which became a major adversary of the Ukrainian national movement.
