Essay

There has been carried out a complex research of the level, content and forms of self-organization of Ukrainian society during World War II. The dissertation paper reveals a reunion process of West Ukrainian lands forming part of Ukrainian SSR, specific features of the first (1939-1941) and second (from 1944) waves of spreading soviet ideology in the area, the region's integration to All-Union community, as well as transformations in the Ukrainian national movement for liberalization taking place under the influence of war events. It also observes the development of OUN's and UPA's manifesto basis, their strategic and tactical means of struggle. Efficiency and real after-effects of communist Resistance Movement representing socialist system are analysed, and basic spontaneous manifestations together with soviet patriotic actions organized "from above" are restructured. The work also outlines basic tendencies of public associations' and movements' activity under German and Romanian occupation, and grounds reasons and circumstances for their elimination by Stalin's regime, means of social life unification and debarment of opposition thinking of any kind. There is shed light on a specific character of social and political life of West Ukrainian area under the Kremlin's struggle against independence movement. There have been formulated several theoretical theses, generalizations and conclusions which define the essence of the processes those taking place in the field of relations between individual public institutions and power structures, as well as analysed moral and psychological state and spirit of various layers of population.
