Essay

The question of the unity of the all Ukrainian lands, which were outlined by the ideologists of national movement at the end of XIX - beginning of the XX centuries, was realized during the WW I and unfinished Ukrainian revolution of 1917-21. The defeat of Ukrainian revolution 1917-21 was a comparative one. The heritage of Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR)/Western-Ukrainian People's Republic (WUPR) as well as Act of January 22, 1919 called into being USSR (Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic), which, in fact, was communist national quasi-state. It was forced concession of the Russian Bolsheviks towards Ukrainian aspiration for independent state. After the occupation of the territory of WUPR by the Second Rich Pospolyta, Nadnipryanska (Central) Ukraine, where during 1920th the outlooks for national renascence were more convincing than Galician ones, assumed the role of Ukrainian Piedmont. The contribution of Western Ukrainian to the realization of state policy of "ukrainianization" in the USSR was distinguished. It was proved, that representatives of Western Ukrainian intelligentsia made significant contribution to the cultural and educational fields of the republic, first of all, it referred the People's Committee of Education (PCE) of the USSR (PCE's staff, heads of research organizations, heads of universities, professors, teachers and others). In their turn, Ukrainian national communist leaders (O. Shumskyi, M. Skrypnyk and others) aimed to use "Galician potential of national building" as much as it was possible to affect all aspects of national activities of the USSR. The head of PCE M. Skrypnyk initiated the recruitment of Galician teachers (from one third to one half of their total number) to serve in the educational field of republic. The similar intention about Western Ukrainian physicians had the People's Committee of Health (PCH) of the USSR.
