Essay

The dissertation explores the Ukrainian-language legal press of Volyn, Holmshchyna and Pidlyashshya on different historical stages of these regions' cohabitation with other Ukrainian ethnographic territories and in a context of the world historical processes of the 20th century: 1917-1939, 1939-1941, 1941-1944, 1944-1990, 1990-2000. The work is prepared by method of comparative analysis on the basis of archived materials and conceptions of Ukrainian and foreign theorists and historians of mass communication. In particular, press of Volyn, Polissya, Holmshchyna and Pidlyashshya (that were under Russian domination till 1917 and constituted a part of Polish Republic since 1921) in 1917-1939 is compared to the press of Ukrainian state-building period (1990-2000), and occupation press of the same space in 1941-1944 (period of the General province and Raishskomissariat) with the Soviet press of the Volyn region within the Soviet Ukraine (1939-1941, 1944-199). Pre-Soviet and independent media in Ukraine demonstrate unity of democratic models whereas collaborative and Soviet press is shown as representation of totalitarian archetype. Research is focused on 424 periodicals and thousands of the authors that created informational and cultural space in western Ukrainian regions.
