Essay

Based on published sources, archives and historical works by Ukrainian and foreign authors, this dissertation for the first time in national history is providing the comprehensive research on the financial support organised for Ukrainian students living abroad during the 1920-1991 period. The thesis is examining specifics of the formation of Ukrainian student movements as well as the attitude of official bodies in exile of the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR) regarding this issue. The work is thoroughly presenting the activity of independent Ukrainian support communities in Europe during the inter-war period, particularly in countries with the highest concentration of Ukrainian students, e.g. Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Germany as well as Belgium, Italy and France. All these support committees existed at different times. Particular emphasis was made on researching the Support committee for Ukrainian students which was founded in November 1940. Such charitable support gave tremendous opportunity to thousands of Ukrainian students living abroad to become specialist in different areas. It is pivotal to emphasise that the trend of financial support of Ukrainian students by Ukrainian emigrants was adopted after WW II by other European socialist nations namely Czechs, Estonians, Latvians, Lithuanians.
