Essay

This thesis investigates the processes of formation of codegraphy theoretical and practical grounds (description of manuscripts) and bibliographic description of old-printed books in the period of collection, registration and cameral analysis of manuscript-book heritage, formation of historic-bibliological methods of scientific investigation of a book, spread on the territory of Ukraine, existing as a part of Russian and Austrian-Hungarian Empires. The period of 1870-1930 in the history of Ukrainian bibliology is marked by the development of cameral methods in the archaeography of a manuscript book, further turning into an independent discipline - codegraphy, as well as bibliographic methods of old-printed books description. This syncretic stage of development of special historic-phililogical disciplines is connected with the accumelation of empiric descriptive material in the field of book history, understanding of the structure and methods of receiving special knowledge in relation to a book as an independent historic source, formation of object, subject and methods of bibliology, first of all in the field of history of early periods of a book. Four stages of the development of book sources scientific description are singled out - from general registration to scientific source study; those characterising formation of the practical stage of science and theoretical methodological grounds of bibliology. The thesis defines different approaches to the principles of scientific cataloging of manuscript and old-printed books in this period, as well as the types of scientific entry. The research characterises central and regional scientific centres of book collection and investigation, bibliographic reconstruction of scientific works in the field of codegraphy and bibliography of an old-printed book has been accomplished.
