Konstantinova V. Processes of urbanization in the South of Ukraine (the second half of the ХІХ - the early ХХ century).

The dissertation is a first complex study of the urbanization in the South of Ukraine (1861-1904 years), accomplished on the base of numerous primary sources. The typology and dynamics of changes in the number of urban settlements of the South are studied. Evolution of the system of management by ur-ban settlements, the role of urban settlements in the economic development of the South are enucleated. Socio-cultural aspects of urbanization in the region (social stratification and social mobility; the role of urban settlements in the social life of the South; cities and towns as cultural centers; the role of urban set-tlements in development of educational institutions and public health services) are analyzed. Specifics of urban population of the region (peculiarities of population concentration; ethnic structure of townspeople; urban mentality; peculiarities of urban everyday life) are characterized.
