Essay

The thesis is focused on the social, political and scientific activity of S.Efremov (1876 - 1939), one of the most prominent representatives of the Ukrainian liberal movement in Ukraine. On the basis of numerous sources and present historiography the integral system analysis of the formation and changes of S. Yefremov's worldview as well as the main directions and forms of his public activity in various historic periods is carried out, from the end of the XIX-th century to his death in 1939. The particularities of his tactics concerning his public activity have been examined, they were mostly manifested in the consistent support of the Ukrainian national interests under various historical circumstances. The experience of publishing, journalistic, cultural, public, political and scientific work of S.Efremov is objectively interpreted. The author of dissertation adheres to the opinion that S.Efremov saw his main task in an extensive educational work aimed at the growth of national awareness of the Ukrainians; S.Efremov's liberalism had mainly structural character as it implied a search for a compromise that could be aсcepted by all political parties. He made a valuable contribution to science as he actually founded library science, bibliography, bibliology, etc.
