Essay

This dissertation deals with a study of morphological categories of verb aspect, lexical and grammatical categories of phase, and other implicit aspectual categories of the Russian language. It is found that the categories of limitation, time localization, singularity and multiplicity in the grammatical semantics of verb aspect are represented by corresponding semes. In this dissertation we propose a componential formula for grammemes of perfective and imperfective aspects, which implies that the fundamental difference between the aspects lies in the additional set of semes in the grammeme of imperfective aspect: it contains the semes of non-limitation, non-localisation and multiplicity, which are absent in the grammeme of perfective aspects. Connection between categories of phase and aspect is shown by the presence of phase invariant in all aspectual pairs, as well as by the presence of phase paradigms of verbs of both aspects. In this dissertation we developed the theory of phase paradigmatics, provided a term for phase paradigm, described its structure and criteria to determine phase relationship between verbs in the paradigm, analyzed phase paradigms of the verbs of different semantics, as well as proposed an idea for a dictionary of phase paradigms for Russian verbs, its concept and structure.
