Essay

This thesis represents the first systematic analysis of the theories and ideas in the field of general linguistics in Romanian and Ukrainian science about language performed in a comparative diachronic modus. In the frames of the paper problems of formation and development of the ideas and theories in the domain of general linguistics are being studied. Such fundamental problems as nature and essence of language, language and society, language as a unique sign system, structure of the language system, language as a historical category are presented in the history of Ukrainian and Romanian linguistics on the background of European linguistic tradition are being investigated diachronically, in the terms of scientific paradigms (descriptive, comparative historical, structural, anthropocentric). The development of theories in the field of general linguistics in Ukrainian and Romanian science about language (the XIXth - early XXIst century) is also inseparably connected with social, ideological and political conditions, such as union of the Danubian principalities (1859), historical political and philological disputes between Romania and Hungary for Transylvania (the problem of Thraco-Roman continuity in Transylvania), ideologizing of the linguistic science in the former Soviet Union and Romania in 1947-1989.
