Essay

The thesis deals with the origin, establishment and historical development of archives in the USA. The archival movement of historical societies in the states (1791-1936) for preservation of records of the American nation heritage, the historians' movement for foundation of the U.S. National Archives (1908-1934) is presented in the thesis; the contribution of the prominent historians is characterized. The historical development of the state archives and U.S. National Archives is highlighted. Much attention is paid to records federal centers, presidential libraries and Electronic Records Archives "ERA". The development of the theory of appraisal and methods of archival collections' systematization are analyzed. The role and importance of the Public Archives Commission and the Conference of American Archivists in the formation of American archivists' professional identity are presented; the history, constituent documents and main directions of the Society of American Archivists, its international activity is characterized. Much attention is paid to archival education as the main factor in the development as the archival branch in the USA, the problem of archivists' certification included.
