The object - adaptive sports as a kind of social practice; Aim - method-theory study of Special Olympics social practice under circumstances of present-day community development and International Olympic system functioning; Methods: theoretical level methods; analogy, analysis and synthesis, abstracting, induction, extrapolation, system-functional and system-structural analysis, historic methods (comparative historical and retrospective), pedagogic monitoring, sociological methods: survey and documentary data analysis, mathematical statistics methods; Novelty - the complex study of Special Olympiads social practice containing historical, organizational, methodological, conceptual and normative components has been carried out; the concept of socially-oriented training system for Special Olympics sportsmen has been established ; the application system of sportive means in social adaptation of people with mental retardation has been scientifically substantiated; the complex informational support system of training system structural components in special Olympic sports has been scientifically substantiated; the developmental trend of Special Olympiads sportive movement under circumstances of present-day community development and International Olympic system have been revealed; Special Olympics sportsmen nosological profile has been developed. Results - the place of Special Olympics in the system of International Olympic Movement has been defined, the problem sphere of the branch has been outlined; the criteria evolution of engaging people with mental retardation into Special Olympiad programs has been characterized; the content and evolution of Special Olympics International organization regulations has been described; it has been stated that present-day Special Olympics development is characterized by undulating positive evolution of developmental quotient, regional disproportion, guidelines for action extention, globalization, integration of volunteer principles with the use of highly professional approaches, focus on the level of sports popularity while choosing the sports for athletes with mental retardation, maximum use of media resources; the present-day period of Special Olympics international sportive movement development has been described , it has also been brought into comparison with other adaptive sports areas; the "preventive mechanisms" of Special Olympics progress towards negative phenomenon in modern sport have been revealed; formative factor of Special Olympics training system has been detected and the content of its components has been described; the evaluation of socio-adaptive effect from systematic training for athletes with mental retardation has been made.
