Essay

The thesis is the systematic investigation of the essence and functions of the artistic interpretation as the whole cultural phenomenon. The Cultural-Hermeneutic methodology, developed in the thesis, leads to the understanding of the interpretation as a continuous trans-historical process that connects works of art, philosophy, religion, science. We introduce the hermeneutic, culturological definition of the artistic interpretation that includes not only such traditional forms as the acting, playing, directing, translating, but also the artistic interpretations of the "non-artistic" experience, the new forms of intergeneric transpositions and the "agonal" reevaluation of the cultural heritage. Thus the artistic interpretation acquire ever widening integrative, culture-forming functions. The intertextual orientation of the contemporary art directs the recipient to the instauration of the maximal number of the work's potential meanings. The criterion of understanding is the comprehension of the "central meaning" that provides the stability of a work of art throughout all the interpretations it undergoes. The adequacy of an artistic interpretation depends on the congruency of the intention and its factual results. Thus the Hermeneutic understanding and evaluation of the "secondary" (interpretative) work of art should consider not only the type of semiotic transformations, but also the author's communicative strategy and the degree of correspondence between the concept and the final artistic text.
