In the thesis on the basis of a wide source base and combination of methodological approaches of general scientific, specific scientific and applied levels, the development of epistemological foundations of the Ukrainian historical and pedagogical narrative as a nonlinear process of the construction by the native researchers in the 1840 – 1980s and extra-source knowledge of the pedagogical past are analyzed. The definitions of «epistemological foundations» and «Ukrainian historical and pedagogical narrative» are formulated. Under epistemological principles we mean the defining epistemic constructs that underlie in the basis of knowledge: ideological-philosophical, political-ideological, socio-cultural, scientific-interdisciplinary and proper disciplinary (historical and pedagogical). The notion «Ukrainian historical and pedagogical narrative» is defined as the totality of the historical and pedagogical heritage (metatext) of the researchers of education and pedagogical thought of the past who resided / reside on the territory of Ukraine or abroad within the Ukrainian diaspora.
