Essay

The dissertation focuses on defining the role and place of military translation in the theoretical system of translation studies. The conducted research covers a range of theoretical topics in the domain of military translation theory, summarizes the unique long-standing experience (1993-2017) of educating military translators/interpreters in Ukraine and their professional feedback. The author analyzes the practical component of military translation, reviews existing scholarly works, theoretical ideas, academic and methodological provisions in the field of military translation theory. The study presents types of military translation, identifies functional-pragmatic and genre varieties of military texts, their structure and proposes their basic classification. It also demonstrates the strategy, tactics and technology of translation as separate phases and macrostructural levels of translation process, outlines conceptual framework for the linguistic support of forces in Ukraine and NATO, and reveals the essence and types of translation and interpreting in the armed forces.
