Essay

Based on a wide range of archival sources and scientific literature, for the first time in Ukrainian historiography the development of Folk Studies (including ethnography, ethnology, anthropology, folklore and folk art) at Lviv University during 1895–1947 was characterized in its full complexity. The topic of the scientific work is explored using issue-specific chronological approach through the prism of different contexts, discourses and scientific connections. While describing the contexts, the author analyzed general principles of activity of Lviv University in the late 19th – first half of the 20th century with the emphasis on the peculiarities on different stages of this period and on factors that shaped these peculiarities, such as political situation on the Western Ukrainian territories, educational reforms etc.
