Essay

The dissertation contains a systematic analysis of the establishment and development of media education in general education institution in the developed English-speaking countries in the framework of which trends of the development of media education of students in general education institution of the developed English-speaking countries are detected and justified in order to find out prospects of the positive experience usage in Ukraine. The state of research on the problem of media education in Ukrainian and foreign scientific space is described. On the basis of the results of the analysis of the source base, basic directions of research of national and foreign scholars are identified, namely: media education in the context of intercultural research; media psychology; development of critical thinking of the audience in the media education process; theory of media and media education; history of media education; media literacy; media education technologies in education; teachers’ media competence. The theoretical basis of media education in the research field of the developed English-speaking countries has been revealed. A retrospective analysis of the development of media education of students at the general education institutions in the developed English-speaking countries (Australia, Canada, UK and United States) have been carried out that allowed the justification of the author’s periodization which covers five periods (preparatory, transition, institutionalization, digitization, post-truth). The role of national organizations in defining strategies for the development of media education in English-speaking countries is revealed. The goals, objectives and basic principles of media education of students in developed English-speaking countries are highlighted. The mediaorientation of the content of school education in developed English-speaking countries has been revealed in dissertation. The organization of professional training of teachers in media education for students in developed English-speaking countries has been defined. Development trends of media education of students of general education in the developed English-speaking countries have been identified. The trends of conceptualization, legislation, institutionalization and standardization, which are common to all countries, show that the development of media education in developed English-speaking countries is characterized by dynamism, systemacity, scope and continuity. The peculiarities of the formation of media education in Ukraine are revealed. The harmonization of the development of media education of students in Ukraine with the tendencies of development in the English-speaking countries is analyzed. Prospects for using the constructive experience of developed English-speaking countries in media education for students at the general education institutions in Ukraine have been established.
