Essay

Based on a wide range of archival sources and scientific literature, for the first time in Ukrainian historiography, the activities of Lviv University in the late XVIII – early XX centuries have been comprehensively described. Particular emphasis has been placed on the specifics of the educational and scientific process, phenomena and processes that reflect the situation in the national sphere, on organizational changes that took place in higher education at that time. Coverage of transformations in these areas has been carried out through the prism of the analysis of the teaching staff of the University and educational and scientific areas. As a result of the study, it has been stated that during 1784–1918 Lviv University underwent three significant organizational transformations in terms of forms of functioning: Lviv Imperial-Royal University (Josephine University), 1784–1805 – Lviv Lyceum, 1805–1817 – Franz I Imperial-Royal University of Lviv (Franciscan University), 1817–1918.
