Essay

The thesis is devoted to a complex and thorough translation study of the specifics of rendering in Ukrainian translations of linguistic and stylistic features of the francophone historical novel, based on the material of Charles De Coster’s novel «The Legend of Ulenspiegel» and four translations of the novel into Ukrainian by T. Chertoryzka (1953), E. Yegorova (1972), S. Sakydon (1974) and N. Gordienko-Andrianova (1979). The aim of the thesis is to identify the specifics of the reproduction of linguistic and stylistic features of the francophone historical novel in four Ukrainian translations made by different translators in different years, through the prism of linguocultural studies. The purpose of the study involves solving the following tasks: – to explore the historical and cultural contexts of the novel that influenced the author’s choice of the original of certain linguistic and stylistic means; – to analyze the genre and style dominants of the historical novel in combination with a literary legend; – to single out the characteristic genre features of the novel «The Legend of Ulenspiegel» and to trace their reproduction in four translations; – to determine how the author’s position of the writer can be traced in the design of the images of the main characters of the novel and how accurately these images were reproduced in translations into Ukrainian; – to single out stylistic and lexical-semantic features of the novel and to follow the ways and means of their reproduction in translation; – to find out how to translate obsolete words and expressions, archaisms, historical and national realia, phraseology, vernaculars, regional vocabulary (belgicisms, flandrisisms) when translating a piece of writing with time distance; – to investigate the preservation of the author’s style of Charles De Coster in translations; – to establish with the help of which translation strategies and techniques the translators managed not only to reproduce the linguistic and stylistic features of the novel in translations, but also to achieve the same communicative effect on the reader as the original; – to determine the factors of influence and criteria for assessing the quality of multiple translations. The scientific novelty lies in a comprehensive translation study of the francophone novel «The Legend of Ulenspiegel» by identifying the linguistic and stylistic features of the historical novel. For the first time, the ways of translating author’s stylized novels into Ukrainian, complicated by a symbiosis of different genres and epochs, were studied. The plurality of Ukrainian translations of the literary work of Charles De Coster (August 20, 1827 – May 7, 1879), who is considered the founder of the national literature of Belgium, and his novel «The Legend of Ulenspiegel», created in the XIX century – a literary masterpiece, the «Bible of Belgium» –, were studied for the first time. Taking into account the position on the genre conditionality of the architectonical and compositional structure of the work, it is established that De Coster’s novel is characterized by time diversity, contrast, parallelism, intertextuality and allusiveness, allegory and symbolism, repetition, naturalism, use of comic palette and travel motif. Therefore, it is proposed to consider all these characteristics as features of a historical stylized novel that need to be reproduced in translation. The preservation of Charles De Coster’s authorial style in translation is being studied for the first time. New is the establishment of ways to reproduce the basic lexical, semantic and stylistic means of the romantic work of Charles De Coster. A new updated classification of obsolete words is proposed. The concepts of double historical stylization of archaic-archaized texts, secondary historical stylization by the translator and pragmatic historical stylization aimed at overcoming losses in the translation of stylized historical novels are introduced.
