Essay

Grazia Deledda (1871 – 1936) is a famous Sardinian writer, the first winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature among women in Italy, and the second among women in the world (after the Swedish writer Selma Lagerlef). Her works have absorbed the features of all literary movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and have become a source of inspiration for future generations of writers (in particular, we can trace parallels with Elena Ferrante). Deledda's novels and short stories became known throughout the world and translated into various languages. But like the works of many other Italian writers, her creative heritage in Ukraine is not studied well, especially in the field of translation studies. Therefore, the aim of the research was to identify the main dominants of the writer’s individual style and the ways of reproduction of such dominant in translation, as well as trace the interaction of the author’s individual style of and the individual style of translators. Regarding the structure of the work: the dissertation consists of in an introduction, three chapters with conclusions, general conclusions, literature references and additional materials. In the first chapter we examined and the main movements and in Italian literature of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, described the main features of Grazia Deledda’s works, defined lexic dominants of her idividual style and outlined a methodology for the study. In the second chapter we described the research matherials and discussed the ways of translation of each lexical dominant of the writer’s individual style. The third chapter is devoted to the study of the interaction of the individual style of the translator and the individual style of the author, as well as the analysis of the main errors of the translators.
