Essay

The thesis considers the issues of rendering and standardization of medical terminology in German-Ukrainian lexicographic sources in the context of translation-oriented terminology science and in the light of linguistic and translation aspects of the study of medical terminology. The paper covers scientific approaches to the interpretation and study of the term as a fundamental unit of science, proposes its definition, and refutes a number of requirements for it. The proven interdependence between translation studies and terminology science has made it possible to distinguish a separate direction in Ukrainian translation studies called translation-oriented terminology science. Being an applied branch, translation-oriented terminology science has both general linguistic dimensions (structural, semantic, pragmatic, and normative) and specific aspects of terminology research related to translation studies that are highlighted in the thesis: reproducible and qualitative. By answering such questions as in which way? and how?, translation aspects of terminology science provide for the study of equivalent sameness of the original text in the translation, their justification and normativity, variant equivalents in the target text, impact of translation equivalents on translation adequacy, phenomena of intra- and intertextual homogeneity, as well as terminological neologisms and their introduction into the terminology system of the target language.
