Essay

The thesis focuses on the analysis of trends in Ukrainian literature of the 1930s–1980s in terms of official socialist-realist discourse and national counterdiscourse. The focus of the observation is the 1950s and 1970s as a time of formation and functioning of a systematic and conscious discourse of resistance to socialist-realist doctrine in Ukrainian literary practices. For the first time in Ukrainian socialist-realist studies, a discursive/counterdiscursive approach is tested. As a tool for analyzing a large array of mostly prose of the 1930s and 1980s, it made it possible to build a holistic vision of Ukrainian literature of the Soviet period. Thus, the study provides grounds to consider the application of discursive/counter-discursive approach to the socialist-realist studies productive, and therefore worthy of the further use in the paradigm of modern literary criticism.
