The dissertation is devoted to the study of structural and semantic features of phraseological units functioning in English military-oriented literary texts using general scientific and specific methods of linguistic research, which allowed to investigate the conceptual, morphological, semantic components of phraseological units, their linguistic and functional features, ways of their implementation in military-oriented literary text and to implement a comprehensive approach to the use of quantitative methods for characterizing phraseological units. The aim of the research is to investigate the structural, semantic and functional features of phraseological units in English military-oriented literary texts and to verify the peculiarities of their functioning using linguistic and statistical methods. The introduction states the relevance of the research topic, formulates the aim and objectives of the work, presents the subject, object and methodological tools of scientific research, defines the practical significance and scientific novelty of the dissertation, presents the structure of the dissertation, and provides information on the number of publications on the research topic and testing of its results at international and national scientific and practical conferences. The first chapter “Theoretical foundations of research of phraseological units in military-oriented literary texts ” distinguishes the concepts of a phraseological unit, an English military-oriented literary text and idiomatic space. 9 A phraseological unit is defined as fixed syntagmatic system with minimal productivity of syntactic schemes and inherent transformational destructiveness, i.e. a phraseological unit is a multivalent unit of language characterized by figurative meaning. The differential features of phraseological units include the stability of composition and structure; imagery; integrity of semantics; ability to be reproduced in the language. The differentiating features of literary text and literary discourse are determined; the peculiarities of functioning of English military-oriented literary texts are identified. The main features of the English military-oriented literary texts are highlighted, in particular: irony, symbolism, hints, epigraphs, open ending, quotations, retrospection, description, several views on the same events, metaphors, riddles, “genre diffusion”. The idiomatic space of English military-oriented literary texts is understood as a linguistic complex hierarchical system of discrete phraseological units that have both qualitative and quantitative characteristics. The second chapter “Methodology of research on phraseological units” selects and justifies the methods used to study the idiomatic space of English military-oriented literary texts: general scientific methods and specific methods (methods of semantic, structural and contextual analysis, quantitative methods). In addition, the procedure for creating the source base of the study, as well as the formation of a representative sample of phraseological units. The source base of the study was seven English military-oriented literary texts by contemporary authors with a total volume of 3376 pages. The factual material of the study was a corpus of 1670 phraseological units collected by the method of through writing. The application of quantitative methods showed that the statistical error for the specified sample size is 3,2%. The research was conducted in five stages (content-theoretical, informational, methodological, analytical, and final). At each stage, certain goals were achieved, relevant tasks were solved, methodological approaches were implemented, and the methodological apparatus of the study was used. This made it possible to realize the 10 defined objectives of the study, to prove the reliability of the results obtained regarding the peculiarities of the idiomatic space of English military-orinted literary texts. In the third chapter “Linguistic features of English phraseological units”, based on the part-of-speech criterion and contextual analysis, the phraseological units of English military-orieneted literary texts are classified on the basis of morphological features into verbal (64,31%), substantive (19,34%), adverbial (5,99%), adjectival (8,02%) and interjections (2,34%). For each class, the role of the nuclear component is played by the corresponding part of speech. Metaphorized phraseological units are used in English military-oriented literary texts, which account 70,48% of the sample. The use of a large number of metaphors is justified, since the works under study deal with the lives, experiences and losses of the characters of research, the consequences of war, etc.
