Essay

This dissertation represents a significant contribution to contemporary linguistics as it develops a new methodology for studying the linguistic-social features of implementing the concept of PANDEMIC in modern English. The main methodological elements of the research include the application of lexicographic analysis, selection of empirical material from English-language media discourse, and conducting an experiment involving native English speakers. The findings of the study allowed to refine theoretical knowledge in studying the concept of PANDEMIC by identifying its representatives at different lexical levels, as well as by elucidating the formation of neologisms and changes in the meaning and perception of the concept in the mental world of English speakers. Linguistic theories, particularly in the fields of semantics, stylistics, and discourse analysis, were developed and modified. One of particular importance is the identification of how language changes and adapts in crisis situations, which is crucial for the linguistic study of crisis communication and the formation of public opinion. The study also revealed the peculiarities of linguistic adaptation and the use of the term "pandemic" in different cultural and social contexts. Thus, this dissertation holds significant theoretical value as it expands the understanding of language, perception, and communication in the context of global crises and emergencies. Its results contribute to a better understanding of the impact of language on shaping public opinion and the development of linguistic constructions in crisis conditions. It has been noted that the concept of PANDEMIC is not sufficiently studied, considering the recent changes that have led to the expansion of the concept's structure, as well as changes in its metaphorical perception by representatives of different linguistic cultures. Despite the fact that some domestic and foreign linguists have addressed the issue of studying the PANDEMIC concept, their focus has been more narrow: J. Lakoff, an American cognitive scientist and linguist, studied how language and framing influence people's perception and reactions to pandemic events in his work "Metaphors We Live By" (1980); R. Lakoff explored the concept in her work "Language and Woman's Place" (1975); S. Gentzel conducted research on "The Language of Covid-19: Communicating the Coronavirus Pandemic" regarding the impact of language on perception and communication during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020); D. Tannen wrote "Covid-19, Risk, and Pandemic Culture: The View from Social Interaction" (2020); A. Liddy authored "CoronaVirus Discourse: A Critical Discourse Analysis of COVID-19 Media Narratives" (2020); Ukrainian linguist O. Ponomariv investigated the issue of the pandemic on the example of Ukrainian media in works such as "Language and Pandemic: Using Linguistic Tools to Analyze Communication Strategies of Ukrainian Media during the Spread of COVID-19" (2020) and "Language and Communication in Times of Pandemic: Linguistic Analysis of Speech Strategies in Ukrainian Society" (2021); N. Petlyuchenko et al. published "COVID-19 as a media-cum-language event: Cognitive, communicative, and cross-cultural aspects" (2020); V. Mizetska et al. explored "Administration of the educational process (legal and linguistic-didactic aspects) in the conditions of quarantine and post-quarantine measures caused by COVID-19."
