Essay

In the dissertation, based on a wide range of sources and literature, taking into account the relevant theoretical and methodological base, a comprehensive a historical study of the everyday life of the Greek ethnic minority in Ukraine in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century. The scientific novelty of research results is determined by the following criteria: - a comprehensive analysis of the state of research into the everyday life of the Greek population in Ukraine was carried out; - the main areas of realization of the basic needs for housing, clothing and food among the Greeks of Ukraine were revealed, the difficulties caused by the Soviet reality were determined; - the influence of the national policy of the Soviet government on changes in the social and everyday aspects of everyday life of the Greek ethnic minority was investigated; - the peculiarities of the formation of social attitudes of various strata of the Greek ethnic minority under the conditions of the growth of totalitarian tendencies in society are traced; - received further development revealing the features of the deformation and destruction of the traditional worldview of Greek communities under the influence of the totalitarian policy of the Soviet government; - the content of concepts and terms related to the everyday life of Greek communities on the territory of Ukraine has been clarified. 7 The first chapter of the dissertation analyzes the state of scientific development of the topic in historiography, the source base of the research, as well as the theoretical and methodological basis of the research. The historiography of the researched topic can be divided according to several methods, the most common of which is the division into Soviet and modern Ukrainian historiography, as well as the division into time intervals that characterize the degree of development of the issue. The source base of the work is multifaceted and consists of unpublished archival documents stored in the central archival institutions of Ukraine, published collections of documents and materials, statistical data, archival periodicals, memories, memoirs. Despite the presence of a large number of scientific studies devoted to various ethnic minorities and the Greek minority directly, it is worth noting the absence of a single comprehensive work that would comprehensively reveal the features of the everyday life of the Greek population in Ukraine in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century. In the second chapter of the dissertation, the factors of formation and organization of everyday life of the Greek population in Ukraine are analyzed. In particular, the impact on the Greek community of the indigenization policy, which was actively pursued by the Soviet government from the mid-20s of the 20th century, and had a positive impact on the development of Greek culture. At the same time, the policy of indigenization primarily envisaged the integration of Soviet ideals into the environment of the Greek ethnic community, and was carried out exclusively in this direction. However, this period also became a time of favorable conditions for the revival of the Greek language and culture, especially in the Azov region, where the majority of Ukrainian Greeks lived. The collectivization carried out by the Soviet authorities since the end of the 20s of the 20th century became a real disaster for the economic system of the Greek peasants. The Soviet authorities quickly realized that the peasants would resist the voluntary loss of property earned over the years, and collectivization began to be carried out by violent and coercive methods. Those peasants who tried to resist were declared enemies of the people and brutal repressive measures were applied to them. 8 The famine of 1932-1933, artificially organized by the Soviet authorities, became a real tragedy for the entire peasant population of Ukraine, and for the Greek peasants in particular. The Greek peasantry finally lost the ability to resist and was forced to completely submit to the Soviet economic scheme in order to survive. In the second half of the 1930s, a series of repressive measures against the Greeks led to the final liquidation of all those small cultural achievements of the period of indigenization. A large number of Greek cultural figures were executed or imprisoned, the Greeks of Ukraine became part of the Soviet economic machine and lost most of their cultural characteristics. The third chapter of the dissertation provides a description of the material factors of everyday life of the Greek ethnic minority. The life of Greek families underwent significant changes during the 1920s, and many ancient traditions were gradually and sometimes rapidly receding into the past.
